Sony Makes Xperia S Android 4.0.4 Source Code Available

Sony Xperia S Enlarge picture - Sony Xperia S
Following the release of Ice Cream Sandwich for its Xperia S handsets, Sony Mobile announced the availability of the source code of that platform.

The files are currently available for download through Sony Mobile’s own website, tagged “Open source download for Xperia S (Ice Cream Sandwich); software version 6.1.A.0.452.”

Those who are interested in coming up with their own ROMs for the mobile phone can now head over to the aforementioned website and download the source code for that.

The files will also allow third-party developers to play with the kernel a bit, XperiaBlog suggests.

Xperia S has got a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich only recently, yet the availability of this source code could easily result in the availability of tweaked builds for its users, so stay tuned for more info on the matter.

Phonebook-Stealing Trojan Found on Apple App Store and Google Play (Updated)

Image comment: Shady Find&Call app installed on phone

Shady Find&Call app installed on phone
A suspicious application hosted both on Apple’s App Store and on Google Play has caught the attention of security researchers. Initially they believed it was a SMS worm, but after further analysis they discovered that it was actually a Trojan designed to steal phonebooks.

The rogue app, called Find and Call (Trojan.AndroidOS.Fidall.a / Trojan.IphoneOS.Fidall.a), appears to be a virtual phone book, but its functionality extends to far more than just finding friends and calling them, Kaspersky experts report.

After it’s installed, the program requests the user to register by providing his/her phone number and email address. Once this step is completed, when the victim wants to actually utilize the app, all his/her contacts are secretly uploaded to a remote server.

Besides stealing the phonebook, the shady app can also harvest GPS coordinates and upload them to the same remote location.

However, it gets worse. The malicious element not only steals the information, but it also sends spam SMS messages to all the individuals in the victim’s contact list.

The company that created the app has even a website, but just like the software, it’s also filled with traps.

It attempts to trick users into entering the credentials to their email, social media and PayPal accounts. If you’re guessing that they need the PayPal account to steal money, you are right.

The “donations” that can be made via PayPal go to a company called Labwealth.com PTE. LTD. from Singapore, a shady “Wealth Creation Laboratory.”

By the looks of it, the organization’s owners are experts in creating wealth for themselves.

Both Apple and Google have been warned about the presence of this application, but so far they haven’t responded to Kaspersky’s notifications.

On the other hand, experts believe that the owners of application markets should ensure that malware hidden within the applications they host can be easily reported and removed as quickly as possible.

Update. Both Google and Apple have removed the app from their websites. In an interesting turn of events, Find and Call's creators have contacted AppInsider.ru and told them that the app is still in "beta-testing." The fact that SMSs are sent out to all the contacts is allegedly just a bug.

However, there are still a number of clues which show that the application may be malicious.

Nokia Lumia 910 Spotted on Remote Device Access Program (UPDATE)

Remote Device Access program (screenshot)  - Remote Device Access program (screenshot)
The Lumia 900 is Nokia’s flagship smartphone, but the Finnish company is likely to launch new, powerful Windows Phone devices in the following months.

An unannounced Lumia 910 has been recently spotted on Nokia’s Remote Device Access program, which allows Windows Phone developers to test their applications before submitting them to Marketplace.

This is the same place where the Lumia 900 appeared for the first time, even before Nokia made it official. There are no additional details on the phone’s specs, but rumor has it that this might be powered by Windows Phone 8 platform.

Given the fact that Stephen Elop has recently confirmed the first Windows Phone 8 devices will be launched on the market by the end of the year, it makes sense for the company to allow devs to start testing their apps on such devices as early as possible. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.

UPDATE: It might be fake due to the fact that Nokia Remote Device Access program does not feature Windows Phone devices.

Download Adobe Photoshop Touch 1.2 for iPad

Adobe Photoshop Touch
The limited version of Adobe’s Photoshop application for iPad users has received a major update this week, adding support for higher-resolution images that support the new iPad’s Retina display, auto-sync with the Creative Cloud, and more.

“Transform images with core Adobe Photoshop features in an app designed for tablets,” says Adobe Systems Incorporated.

“Combine images, apply professional effects, share results with friends and family through sites like Facebook, and more – all from the convenience of your iPad,” reads the app’s description.

Adobe Photoshop Touch lets photography enthusiasts employ popular Photoshop features designed for tablet editing. These include layers, selection tools, adjustments, and filters. Users can fill an area on a layer with the “camera fill” feature by pointing their iPad’s camera at specific objects.

Users can select part of an image to extract by scribbling with the Scribble Selection tool, and they can use their fingertips to capture even hard-to-select image elements, like hair,  with the Refine Edge tool.

Existing Photoshop Touch users will be glad to learn that Adobe has increased the maximum supported resolution to 2048 x 2048 pixels.

The company notes that, once users update the app, the default resolution will remain at 1600 x 1600 pixels. Those who want the extra canvas space can select the 2048 pixel resolution in the preferences.

The update further brings automatic synchronization with Creative Cloud, support for six extra languages (English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Italian), and the ability to export works to PSD and PNG formats via Camera Roll or email.

The rotate and flip image workflow has been improved, and users now have the ability to transfer images to desktop via iTunes. New tutorials have been added as well.

Last, but certainly not least, Adobe has added four new Effects. Those are: Watercolor Paint, HDR Look, Soft Light and Soft Skin.

Some bug fixes are also included in this update. Adobe managed to correct the supported languages in iTunes, as well as to fix a Facebook login issue (displays "Success").

Apple’s iOS 6 Maps Application Detailed - 3D Street View

Image comment: C3 Technologies 3D maps rendering

C3 Technologies 3D maps rendering
Thanks to the acquisition of three companies specializing in mapping technologies, Apple can finally unleash its proprietary Maps application in iOS 6, trusted sources have revealed.

Speaking to the people at 9to5mac, a reliable source in and of itself, these sources said the application design is fairly similar to the current Google Maps app running on all iPhones and iPads in iOS 5.

Apple’s Maps, however, is described as “a much cleaner, faster, and more reliable experience.”

The service is the brainchild of three mapping companies strategically acquired by Apple with intentions to ditch Google’s mapping service. Apple’s will not only be proprietary, and therefore more reliable with respect to iOS, but it will also have 3D capabilities. Buckle up!

Of the three companies acquired by Apple with this purpose - Placebase, C3 Technologies, and Poly9 - one in particular has allowed Apple to design a 3D database much like Google’s street view, only more realistic (examples in the photo above, and the video embedded below).

Before moving its IPs over to Apple Inc., C3 Technologies described its 3D street view capability as follows:

C3 Technologies is the leading provider of 3D mapping solutions, offering photo-realistic models of the world for search, navigation and geographic information systems. Since 2007 when it was spun out of the aerospace and defense company Saab AB, venture-backed C3 has redefined mapping by applying previously classified image processing technology to the development of 3D maps as a platform for new social and commercial applications. The Sweden-based company’s automated software and advanced algorithms enable C3 to rapidly assemble extremely precise 3D models, and seamlessly integrate them with traditional 2D maps, satellite images, street level photography and user generated images, that together are forever changing how people use maps and explore the world.

The 3D mode reportedly doesn’t come enabled by default, but users can switch it on thanks to a handy 3D button in the app.

iOS 6 is set to be showcased at Apple’s annual developer-centric event in June, and perhaps even released to developers as a preview (beta).

Download Twitpic 1.0 for iPhone and iPad

Image comment: Twitpic example

Twitpic example
Twitpic is now available on the App Store supporting iPhones and iPads running iOS 5.0 or newer. Twitpic is the original photo sharing solution for Twitter and arrives on iOS one year late.

Twitter photo sharing is no doubt one of the most popular social activities involving Apple’s platforms.

With an ecosystem already crowded by solutions like Instagram and TweetDeck, Twitpic stands little chance to stand out on iOS, a year after its debut on desktop computers.

Yet Twitpic Inc. has been determined to have a native iOS app for iPhone and iPad users. It’s not universal, meaning iPad owners don’t get an interface that leverages the 10-inch real estate, but everyone can have the Twitpic experience on their iOS device of choice.

“The first ever photo sharing site for Twitter comes to the iPhone! Twitpic is the easiest and best way to share your photos and videos with your Twitter followers,” reads the official description on the iTunes App Store.

The key features include:

★ Quickly and seamlessly share your photos and videos with all of your Twitter followers
★ Edit your photos with beautiful filters and easy to use enhancement tools
★ Browse your Twitter photo timeline with photos from people you follow in a beautiful interface
★ Browse photos from the most popular Twitpic users
★ Manage your Twitpic photos and videos in your own timeline

A service often used by citizen journalists to upload and distribute pictures in real-time as an event is taking place, TwitPic has several characteristics that make it a companion for Twitter.

For example, TwitPic usernames and passwords are the same as the ones in Twitter and comments to photographs are sent as a reply tweet. TwitPic URLs are automatically shortened, which eliminates a hassle many Twitter users have to deal with.

Download iOS 5.1.1 Now

iOS 5.1.1 delivered OTA by Apple
Apple has rolled out a surprise update for iDevice owners with the purpose of tweaking a few things and applying fixes, including some to improve the security of the platform.

iOS 5.1.1 is immediately available for download via iTunes or over-the-air (OTA) and improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut, as well as reliability when syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List.

The update addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks, and bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances.

An issue has been fixed where ‘Unable to purchase’ alert could be displayed after successful purchase.

Lastly, the update includes several security patches targeting Safari, the standard web browser on all Apple platforms.

Impacting iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iPad, and iPad 2, a URL spoofing issue exists in Safari and can potentially be used to direct the user to a spoofed site.

iOS 5.1.1 has improved URL handling which addresses this issue. The problem is not present on Mac OS X systems. Apple credits David Vieira-Kurz of MajorSecurity (majorsecurity.net) for discovering and reporting the issue.

Affecting the exact same platforms, multiple cross-site scripting issues and a memory corruption issue exist in WebKit, a software component required to display web pages in Safari.

With the help of Sergey Glazunov (working with Google's Pwnium contest), as well as Adam Barth and Abhishek Arya of the Google Chrome Security Team, Apple has patched both of these flaws as well.

The impact of these two issues was:

Impact: Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to a cross-site scripting attack

Impact: Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution

iDevice owners can either connect their devices to iTunes and select “check for updates,” or select Settings -> General, and select Software Update from their iOS device to install iOS 5.1.1.

Update: Softpedia readers can manually download their IPSWs via the links below then install using iTunes.

iOS developer tap tap tap has released an updated version of Camera+ 3 on the iTunes App Store. Of the numerous new enhancements, the most noteworthy one is probably the ability to import photos from your photo library back in Camera+.

According to the developers, they never actually removed this feature in the first place: “we changed the icon on the button to a + and moved it to the top-right corner of the Lightbox in version 3,” explains tap tap tap. Users can also import multiple photos from their photo library at once.

The team has updated the empty Lightbox graphic as well with a button represented by the mathematical addition operator. It is now on the starboard side of the Lightbox, toward its apex. The update also deals with a bunch of bugs related to Facebook sharing, Twitter sharing, Flickr sharing APIs, crashes, etc.

Apple Announces “Significant” Update to Final Cut Pro X

Apple has quietly posted a free update to Final Cut Pro X, the company’s professional video editing software selling for $299.99 (239.99 EUR). Version 10.0.3 is regarded as a significant update to the video editing application.

Users shouldn’t let the minor version increment fool them, as FCP X 10.0.3 adds a ton of new features and enhancements, and it all starts with a new collection of tools for editing multicam projects.

The software “automatically syncs clips from your shoot using audio waveforms, time and date, or timecode to create a Multicam Clip with up to 64 angles of video, which can include mixed formats, frame sizes and frame rates,” according to Apple.

A new Angle Editor allows you to make precise adjustments to your Multicam Clip. To play back multiple angles at the same time and seamlessly cut between them, use the Angle Viewer, says Apple.

New advanced controls include color sampling, light wrap, and edge adjustment.

“You can tackle complex keying challenges right in Final Cut Pro X, without having to export to a motion graphics application, and view your results instantly with realtime playback,” Apple explains.

XML-compatible software now offers "tight integration" which aids color correction and media management, and you can now employ the new 7toX app from Intelligent Assistance to import Final Cut Pro 7 projects into FCP X.

Motion graphics plug-ins, developed by some of the industry’s best visual effects developers, now take advantage of the speed and real-time preview capabilities of FCP X, Apple says.

The Cupertino giant also mentions that FCP’s broadcast monitoring feature is currently in beta.

The function allows you to “connect to waveform displays, vectorscopes, and calibrated, high-quality monitors to ensure that your project meets broadcast specifications,” according to the Mac makers.

Final Cut Pro 10.0.3 supersedes version 10.0.2 and 10.0.1, which means it includes all the fixes and enhancements delivered in those versions. The 10.0.3 update is free to all existing users.

Amateur Programmer: SMS Spoofing for Malicious Purposes Is Easy

SMS spoofing is not new, researchers having proved in 2010 for BBC’s Watchdog that it could be done. While most of the telecommunications companies are aware of the risks, few have actually done something to prevent it.

Now, an amateur programmer came forward with a simple app to prove that SMS spoofing for malicious purposes is something widely available, and if measures are not taken, a lot of individuals may be exposed to cybercriminal operations.

Richard Burton, a self-described “completely amateur programmer” with less than 2 years’ experience, managed to develop a simple program that could allow anyone to launch social engineering attacks with the purpose of obtaining valuable information and maybe even money.

The whole thing began with a simple web app for smartphones that was designed to play practical jokes on people, but Burton soon realized that this app could be utilized for the wrong reasons, especially since developing it was not difficult at all.

“The part of the program that sends the message is just 5 lines of code. All the networks just accept the message as valid and send it to their customers without question,” he told us. “This should not be possible, let alone simple.”

Knowing how the networks responded when confronted with this issue two years ago, he tried to reach out to some of them to see if anything had been done in the meantime to address the problem.

Unfortunately, their current view of the situation hasn’t changed much, but Burton is determined not to let this go.

“I was always certain that the networks knew this is possible. After all, they have lots of very smart people working for them. However, I was little surprised to hear that Three have known about the problem 'for years' and that Orange just accepts the status quo by saying 'we have no control over its existence',” he added.

Some companies blame their inability to control SMS spoofing on third-party services, relying on the fact that none of their customers complained so far about receiving messages that were designed to dupe them into handing over sensitive information.

“I completely understand that various third-party services need to be able to set where the message has come from. However, those services should be properly policed by the networks. The network should vet each message it receives from them with much more care. Then it would require a much more intelligent person than I to spoof SMSs.”

Telecoms firms may think that at the moment cybercriminals aren’t relying on SMS spoofing to complete their malicious operations, but as we’ve seen a few hours ago the trust factor that exists between friends, and companies and their customers can be easily taken advantage of.

Compromised email accounts are being used by fraudsters to send out distress calls, asking recipients for large amounts of money. The same types of schemes may be even more successful if SMSs were used instead of emails.
