Emsisoft Anti-Malware 7 Available for Download [Exclusive

Emsisoft just launched version 7 for their flagship product, Anti-Malware. This year, the developer made some radical changes that focus on increasing the detection rate and optimizing malware cleaning.

Emsisoft Anti-Malware is still a dual-engine product, but the proprietary A2 engine no longer has Ikarus as a sidekick; at its side is now Bitdefender’s solution that should provide more reliable scans, with detection rate and a lower number of false alerts.

Malware cleaning has been improved by introducing the possibility to restore registry entries affected by threats.

Better protection against online threats is now achieved through hourly updates for malware, phishing and privacy risk hosts.

Additional enhancements touch on real-time protection, which now uses advanced caching. There are also performance settings to tinker with in order to take full advantage of the system resources, or to just allot enough to leave room for other activities.

Internet Security is Panda Security’s mid-range product that combines all anti-malware layers of protection produced by the company, but lacks the modules for PC optimization, file encryption, file shredding and password management.

Besides the antivirus, it incorporates a two-way firewall, identity protection, anti-spam and parental controls.

Additionally, it can install USB Vaccine, a tool that blocks infections propagating through autorun.inf on USB drives, and Safe Browser, which is a virtualized browser that allows you to conduct sensitive financial operations online.

The 2013 edition of Panda Internet Security introduces a new scan manager, which is designed to increase the file processing speed by up to 70% by leveraging system resources and kicking in only when necessary.

Part of the protection is based on cloud knowledge, which is why the 2013 is touted as reaching the user faster, thus contributing to keeping the newest pieces of malware at bay.

Looks have also been tweaked to offer users easier access to modules and advanced options intuitively hidden for the more seasoned user, putting simplicity and ease of use first. Also, the menus have been turned into tiles making the bundle suitable for use on Windows 8 touch interface.



The price for the 2013 edition varies from country to country (even in Europe) but, for the US, it is $69.99 for three PCs for one year, although this should not be taken as a reference.

Installation is fast this year and completes without user intervention. We needed to reboot the system in order to finalize the procedure.

All modules available in the package are tiled in the landing screen, with some extra options neatly arranged in the lower left part of the interface. These are tools for backing up your data, network management of stations running Panda solutions, Safe Browser, USB Vaccine and Virtual Keyboard.

Safe Browser, just like in the previous editions, is not integrated in Panda Internet Security, and you have to download it separately and install on the system. It is free of charge, but requires VirtualBox in order to function.

The scan options available include the regular choices (Quick, Full and Custom), but there is also ActiveScan Cleaner, offered as an advanced scan solution for removing malware currently active on your computer.

We used the same malware database as in the case of Bitdefender Total Security 2013 (reviewed here) to test the detection and elimination abilities of Panda Internet Security 2013. The entire process took a lot longer than we expected, as well as compared to other suites we subjected to the same on-demand scan tests.

We would often see no activity on the scan screen, but if we waited long enough, we’d see the needle moving again and the progress percentage jump to a higher value. After processing all the files, the engine eliminated 67,451 of the samples and notified us of 17 infections.



This would amount to a 68% detection and elimination rate. However, the value is increased by behavioral analysis technology, dubbed TruPrevent, which acts against unknown threats that evade regular detection.

The built-in firewall is no fancy tool and our tests showed that it is on par with its counterpart in Bitdefender Total Security 2013. On its own, it showed that it is susceptible to DLL injection, leaking information through Windows DNS APIs or modification of services in the registry. But in defense to Panda Internet Security, many of the attacks were dismantled by the behavioral shield.

While testing the suite, we received multiple firewall conflict alerts. The message stated that Windows Firewall was active and advised disabling it and running Panda’s solution. Despite acting as recommended, the messages kept popping up and we proceeded to disabling Windows Firewall completely; but even so, the alerts continued.

As Pedro Bustamante, senior research adviser at Panda Security, explained to us, they are aware of the bug that causes incorrect detection of inactive Windows Firewall and are working on a fix.

Identity Protection module seems to have undergone no change. The moment it detects transmission of confidential information, it will simply emit an alert asking for permission or denial of the operation. This applies to all unencrypted connections.

The Parental Control module also seems unchanged, vulnerable to the same bypasses we tested in Global Protection 2012 and Internet Security 2012. It remains underdeveloped and unadjusted to today’s standards that also include the possibility to restrict applications from running or Internet activity.



User profiles are outdated and it seems like it cannot restrict access to “https://” pages despite them being added to the untrusted URL list. But more importantly, it allows access to subdomains of a blocked domain. This is a door wide open to resources you might otherwise prevent your kid from being exposed to (such as adult content) if they “stumbled” onto the links.

Protection against phishing attacks is also integrated in the suite and, although not the best, our tests showed it can be a powerful ally, especially in combination with a browser with built-in mechanisms to defend you against web forgeries of this sort.

We used 36 fresh phishing sites and Panda managed to detect 27 of them. It let nine of them through, which makes for a detection of 75%.

Backing up with Panda Internet Security 2013 is no tough thing. It is a simple operation that can be carried out either locally or online, if your data can fit in 2GB of free space Panda Security customers get through the company’s partnership with Mozy online backup service. However, the 2GB of cloud storage is freely available to anyone signing up with Mozy, no strings attached.

The options for a local backup let you schedule when safe copies of your data should be created and where they should be stored. You can also opt for immediately starting the operation as well as define an expiration period, when they are deleted.



The Good

The new interface improves usability. You can prevent sensitive information from slipping out of your computer. USB Vaccine efficiently dismantles malware attacks carried out through autoplay.

The Bad

Scan speed took much longer than expected. Safe Browser needs to be downloaded separately and online backup feature is outsourced to Mozy backup service. USB Vaccine is not inherent and needs to be installed.

At one moment an information dialog popped up in Spanish, although the working language was set to English and during testing the interface crashed several times (protection services kept running).

Parental Control module did not improve over the year and is still limited only to restricting web content, to some extent.

The Truth

With competition rolling out new features that attend to various degrees of security, Panda seems stuck with the old ways and just puts on a fresh coat of paint.

Phonebook-Stealing Trojan Found on Apple App Store and Google Play (Updated)

A suspicious application hosted both on Apple’s App Store and on Google Play has caught the attention of security researchers. Initially they believed it was a SMS worm, but after further analysis they discovered that it was actually a Trojan designed to steal phonebooks.

The rogue app, called Find and Call (Trojan.AndroidOS.Fidall.a / Trojan.IphoneOS.Fidall.a), appears to be a virtual phone book, but its functionality extends to far more than just finding friends and calling them, Kaspersky experts report.

After it’s installed, the program requests the user to register by providing his/her phone number and email address. Once this step is completed, when the victim wants to actually utilize the app, all his/her contacts are secretly uploaded to a remote server.

Besides stealing the phonebook, the shady app can also harvest GPS coordinates and upload them to the same remote location.

However, it gets worse. The malicious element not only steals the information, but it also sends spam SMS messages to all the individuals in the victim’s contact list.

The company that created the app has even a website, but just like the software, it’s also filled with traps.

It attempts to trick users into entering the credentials to their email, social media and PayPal accounts. If you’re guessing that they need the PayPal account to steal money, you are right.

The “donations” that can be made via PayPal go to a company called Labwealth.com PTE. LTD. from Singapore, a shady “Wealth Creation Laboratory.”

By the looks of it, the organization’s owners are experts in creating wealth for themselves.

Both Apple and Google have been warned about the presence of this application, but so far they haven’t responded to Kaspersky’s notifications.

On the other hand, experts believe that the owners of application markets should ensure that malware hidden within the applications they host can be easily reported and removed as quickly as possible.

Update. Both Google and Apple have removed the app from their websites. In an interesting turn of events, Find and Call's creators have contacted AppInsider.ru and told them that the app is still in "beta-testing." The fact that SMSs are sent out to all the contacts is allegedly just a bug.

However, there are still a number of clues which show that the application may be malicious.

Creating a bootable USB drive
1. Write the boot sector on a clean flash drive using the utility grubinst_gui.exe (see directory Tools \ grubinst-1.1-bin-w32-2008-01-01) in the list, select Disk =connected USB flash drive (!), After clicking below [REFRESH] in the list of Part List =Whole Disk MBR (or Whole Disk FAT32), click Install (in Vista/Win7 done through the administrator account).
2. Unpack the archive av2012-x4.7z to the root of the stick.
3. Reboot, in the BIOS or via a "hot" key, select to boot from a flash drive.

Notes
it is desirable to use the file system FAT32, with NTFS there are problems in Gentoo Dr.Web. Format the USB flash drive, you can use utilities Tools \ USBFormat;
some distributions on new hardware may be a problem with the graphic mode, use the console in this case;

Total Security is the most complete protection suite from Bitdefender. It encompasses all the components in the other bundles and also offers something on the side. As far as the layers of protection are concerned, there are no additional elements.

In order to complete the installation procedure you need to close down Opera, Thunderbird and Mozilla Firefox.

The extra modules are the only things setting it apart from Internet Security version, so you won’t have to deal with a different interface. Also, you won’t benefit from better security since the exact same components are available in both products.



You can read our take on BitDefender Internet Security 2012 and its malware detection and removal capabilities on this page. Our tests showed a ratio of 95.1%, which is not shabby at all, as it is the second highest we recorded with the same sample database.

Most of the components included in the two suites require a bit more polishing in order to offer the user flexible management and ensure tight security on all fronts. We noticed the firewall was susceptible to more elaborate methods of penetration.

The anti-spam module won’t rid your inbox of all spam messages, but during our tests filtering managed to keep legitimate items in inbox and none of them got sent to the trash folder.

Parental controls are not as easy to maneuver as in other security suites; but the module manages to offer flexible configuration options for imposing restrictions of all sorts. You can blacklist websites or allow access only to some of them as well as cut off Internet access between specific time intervals.

Antivirus, firewall, anti-spam, Safego protection for social networking sites (Facebook and Twitter), prevent leakage of sensitive information, virtualized browser instances and web page scanning for malicious content make for the security feats of the suite.



The components specific to BitDefender Total Security include file encryptions and secure deletion of data. Safebox component is for backing up and synchronizing files between multiple computers and the Tune-Up module is designed for PC optimization purposes only.

The optimization module comprises tools for cleaning up the PC of junk files, defragmenting the disks, nailing duplicate data, and cleaning the registry. It is not a full package for boosting up the performance of the system, but the overall impact should be positive.

Cleaning the system of unnecessary items targets the folders that regularly gather temporary data. This category includes temporary Internet and system files, cookies and the list of recent documents.

However, web browsing remnants deleted in the process are only those created by Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. The PC Clean-Up wizard specifies clearly that in the case of temporary Internet files only data older than 10 days is purged.

We ran the tool several times during our tests and noticed that files older than 10 days were still available on the hard drive in the case of Internet Explorer. Cookies were also left behind in both browsers and Firefox cache remained unaffected.

Furthermore, users won’t be able to view the data selected for deletion as the three-step wizard automatically detects and cleans the folders, showing only the number of items that were eliminated.

Defragmentation with BitDefender Total Security 2012 is actually carried out by the built-in solution in Windows, Disk Defragmenter. To make things easier there is a wizard that guides you through the process of analyzing the drives and defragmenting them.



It is no secret that Windows does not offer the best solution as far as this optimization procedure is concerned, but it is not to be neglected either. There are no reports about the job and the improvements made, just a simple notification that everything completed successfully.

With the duplicate finder bundled in the module, BitDefender turns the page as far as system optimization procedures go. During our tests it showed great accuracy as it also compared the content of the file and it did not resume to checking the creation/modification dates, size and names of the items.

The registry cleaner is designed to get rid of entries left behind when uninstalling programs from the system. The end result of this operation is to improve boot time and system stability.

Due to the sensitive nature of the entries and the fact that deleting false positives could damage system stability, the registry cleaner lets you see the keys selected to be swept out. The list of results is accompanied by details that help you identify the software they refer to as well as the risk of deleting them, if they are false positives.

The tool marks for deletion only entries that point to a DLL file that no longer exists in their original location. Mind that in some cases the DLLs are shared by multiple applications in order to reduce memory and disk space requirements, so taking a look at the results might save you some later trouble.

As a failsafe procedure, before removing registry entries the cleaner backs them up and allows restoration in case the system or some applications fail to operate within normal parameters. This is the last option in the Tune-Up module and a very important one.



Deleting sensitive files beyond the possibility to recover them is another plus of BitDefender Total Security 2012 compared to Internet Security. The option is lodged under Privacy module, together with the file encryption tool.

There are no configuration options available, but you do not really need them, as the tool does the job it was intended for. Just like with any other tool in the suite, a wizard guides you through the shredding process.

During our tests, the shredder did a fine job and no information from the files could be recovered. It corrupted the content so badly that we were unable to extract any details. File names, on the other hand, were left untouched.



File encryption is achieved by creating password–protected vaults (very similar to archives) where you can safely store sensitive information without running the risk that someone might access it. All content is encrypted, so it cannot be intercepted without punching in the correct password.

The wizard gets you through every step, from selecting the files and folders you want to secure, creating a file vault and setting the countersign to locking it. You can create new vaults at any time and of any size the available free space permits you.

Everything sounds pretty simple, and it is, as all you have to do is follow the steps in the wizard. On the downside, you have to define a drive letter each time the vault is mounted.

Handling the vault (locking, unlocking, adding/removing files to/from vault or changing the password) can be done both from Total Security interface as well as from the vault options inserted in Explorer context menu.



Safebox is the file synchronization instrument of the suite. The developer puts 2GB of free online space at your disposal for your backups, for the purpose of the job, but the catch is that you can synchronize items only between computers equipped with BitDefender Total Security 2012.

Automatic synchronization is supported and you can also start the procedure manually. Adding new files to Safebox can be done from Windows Explorer context menu, but we noticed that the option is available only for folders.

Our tests encountered no hurdles during the synchronization process, and everything was transferred with no delay. Of course, the duration of the job depends on the amount of data that needs to be processed.



The Good

The package combines great security tools with components designed to optimize your station in an elegant and easy-to-navigate interface.

The detection rate recorded during our tests was among the highest and sandboxing features can isolate any of the popular web browsers from the system, thus allowing secure browsing and online operations.

You get 2GB free of charge for your file synchronization needs and the transfers are operated with no delay. Safego utility keeps your online social life protected from malicious links.

When in AutoPilot mode, the bundle automatically takes the best decisions in your stead, at the same time offering the possibility to correct bad calls.

The Bad

Optimization instruments are the weak spot in the bundle. They do not offer anything new or better than what you can already find on the market, except for ease of use.

The Truth

BitDefender Total Security 2012 no longer gave us trouble running Opera or any of the popular browsers sandboxed. It is suitable for average and even beginner users, as most of the tools come with a wizard that guides your steps and AutoPilot mode takes decision making off your shoulders.

All in all, if you need synchronization options, file shredding and encryption bundled with great security instruments, BitDefender Total Security 2012 is a smart choice.
