Halo 4 Launch Trailer Now Available

Microsoft has just released the official launch trailer for its upcoming Halo 4 game, produced by David Fincher and directed by Tim Miller, which hints not just at the core conflict of the actual title, but also shows off footage with the origins of the franchise’s hero, Master Chief.

Halo 4 may have been leaked weeks ahead of its actual release on November 6, but Microsoft isn’t affected by this problem and the company has now released the official launch trailer for the long-awaited first-person shooter.

In the footage above, you get to see not just Master Chief facing the “ancient evil” promised by the game’s story, but also glimpses from his origins.

From standing on the beach with his mother when he was a child, to the intense training he received before his powers were augmented in the Spartan program, Master Chief’s life hasn’t been an easy one and, as you can see in the video, even he can make mistakes.

Check out the trailer above and get ready for the release of Halo 4 on November 6, only on the Xbox 360.

Turn 10 Studios has just confirmed that the all-new 2013 Dodge SRT Viper will be coming to its Forza Motorsport 4 racing game this summer, allowing owners to experience the new American sportscar, both during races and in the Autovista mode.

Forza Motorsport 4 has delighted millions of Xbox 360 owners with a top notch racing experience last year and, since its original release, the game has received a wide array of new cars through downloadable content.

After the Alpinestars pack that appeared last week and the upcoming Porsche add-on that will be out in May, developer Turn 10 has revealed that the summer will bring the all-new 2013 Dodge SRT Viper to Forza Motorsport 4.

“The announcement of the SRT Viper is fantastic news for fans of this true-blue American supercar and there’s more good news to boot: The Viper will be coming to Forza Motorsport 4 this summer. This downloadable content will include both a drivable version of the SRT Viper as well as a Viper Autovista experience which, in true Autovista fashion, is designed to give you a stunning view of this incredible machine, as well as insight into its history and production.”

While the Viper will certainly prove to be a major contender for the best cars in Forza Motorsport 4, thanks to its 8.4-liter V10 engine that produces 640 HP, the Autovista model is also going to delight players.

Like with other cars in this special mode, players will be able to interact with the sportscar using either the standard Xbox 360 controller or the Kinect sensor.

Unfortunately, there are no other details available about the pricing or the release date of the Viper DLC for Forza 4.

You can, however, admire the stunning sportscar through a batch of screenshots and a video below.

Nintendo Wii U Might Be Priced at $300 (€228), Report Says

The Nintendo Wii U is coming this yearA brand new report has arrived concerning the upcoming Nintendo Wii U home console, this time speculating on its actual retail price, as well as on the price of its components.

The Nintendo Wii U is awaited by quite a lot of people, as it finally puts the Japanese company on par with its rivals in terms of console power.

We’ve heard quite a few things about the actual hardware of the device, which may or may not be more competent than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Now, website Forget the Box has arrived with a brand new report, this time about the price of the device.

According to internal sources, the Nintendo Wii U currently costs around $180 (€137) to produce, with $50 (€38) being spent just on the special tablet controller that’s going to be bundled with the console.

Even if this might seem quite cheap, the source says that Nintendo is currently thinking of slapping a retail price of $300 (€228) on the actual Wii U when it goes on sale later this year.

While this may sound a bit abusive, don’t forget that Nintendo needs to recoup a big part of the money it invested in the research and the development of the console, not to mention the actual shipping costs.

The website also claims that Nintendo has tried to keep production costs as low as possible, in order to make a high enough profit right from the get-go and satisfy its worried stockholders.

Nintendo investors were definitely scared when the company showed off the Wii U last year, prompting the price of its shares to take a nose dive after years of constant growth.

As of yet, however, we don’t even know when the Nintendo Wii U will actually come out, let alone its price, so this report is still just a rumor.

Quick Look: SSX Demo (with Gameplay Video)

Electronic Arts is finally getting ready to release the all-new SSX title later this month so, in order to get people excited about the snowboarding simulator, it has launched a demo for it on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

We’ve decided to try out the game and see if it can deliver the same classic experience seen in previous games from the series or if it just tarnishes the reputation of the classic franchise.

SSX kicks off with a lengthy tutorial that sees you fall for quite a few kilometers from a helicopter. During this you’re taught the basic controls and the variety of combinations you can pull off by pressing buttons in tandem with the bumpers or the sticks on a controller.

After your lengthy drop, you finally reach the actual mountain on which you’ll be executing your descent. The key here is to always keep moving forward, even if you’re tempted to explore all of the different hidden tunnels or special areas.

SSX, like its predecessors, rewards players that keep stringing together varied tricks. If you repeat the same moves, then the game penalizes you, so you’re always pushed to experiment and try new things.

Once you start building tricks, you fill up your boost gauge, which can be used right before jumps to gain more air, thus earning you more time to show off your skills.

After stringing together enough moves, you enter Tricky mode, where you have unlimited boost and can pull off even more outlandish tricks.

This is where SSX shines, as once you get into the zone, you start bringing off all sorts of great moves with relative ease.

Sure, you might end up missing your landings and going face first into the snow but, with some practice, you’ll soon be tearing it up on the slopes.

Check out SSX in action in the video above. Get ready for its official release on February 28, in North America, and March 2, in Europe and the rest of the world.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss Review (PS Vita)

A working PlayStation Vita console

Uncharted: Golden Abyss review on PS VitaSony may boast about the power of its PlayStation Vita handheld console, but if its games don’t really reflect this through great graphics, then it’s all for nothing. The Japanese company realized this so, in order to truly show off the Vita’s strength, its Bend studio was tasked with making an Uncharted game for the mobile console.

As such, Uncharted: Golden Abyss was born, a prequel of sorts to the games on the PlayStation 3, although its time frame isn’t exactly set in stone. It still features Nathan Drake, alongside his old time partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan, while introducing quite a few new characters from Drake’s past and once again taking him on all sorts of adventures.

So, does Uncharted: Golden Abyss have all the attributes that made previous titles so popular or is it just a pretty game? Let’s find out.

Nathan Drake is back ...
... for some new adventures

Story

As I’ve said above, Golden Abyss aims at exploring Nate’s past before he started the adventures from the first PS3 game, Drake’s Fortune. It reminds people that he was still a treasure hunter, as one of his older associates, Jason Dante, employs his talents to help him uncover a long lost Spanish expedition.

Drake quickly finds out that the actual benefactor of his work is a South American drug lord but Dante doesn’t let him walk away. The game even starts with an action-filled prolog that highlights his “sudden but inevitable” betrayal.

After that, you start from the beginning and slowly progress through the story. During these adventures, you meet new characters, like Marisa Chase, who’s also a descendant of a former adventurer, just like Nate.

While it may lack established characters like Elena or Chloe, Golden Abyss’ story manages to stay interesting and will no doubt entertain most Uncharted fans. It’s filled with lots of adventures, although some of the bigger set piece moments are missing, probably because the Vita can’t render scenes of that magnitude.

Meet some old friends ...
... and make some new ones

Gameplay

Uncharted: Golden Abyss feels pretty much just like a regular Uncharted game from the PS3. This is testimony to the Vita’s power and its control scheme that’s almost the same as on the home console.

The dual analog sticks make aiming and shooting a breeze while the rest of the buttons control all sorts of functions. Golden Abyss also uses the Vita’s special features, like its touchscreen, both when you climb, as you can highlight ledges for Drake, and also when you’re engaged in hand to hand brawls, as you need to make certain gestures to successfully defeat enemies with your bare hands.

Aiming can be done with the Sixaxis motion controls, but it’s probably for the best if you just use the twin analog sticks. There’s also a slight auto-aim assist function, if you find aiming difficult, so Golden Abyss is very accessible to all Vita owners.

Opponents are quite smart although you won’t get to see that many of them, probably because the Vita can’t render that many characters at the same time. As such, you’ll often enter pretty large areas, eliminate some enemies, and then see that more of them quickly arrive to avenge their fallen comrades.

Thankfully, you have quite a lot of weapons at your disposal to defeat them, from trusty pistols to the AK-47 or even more powerful firearms like sniper rifles or rocket launchers. There are even some on-rails segments where you get to use a devastating grenade launcher against some unlucky foes.

Collectibles are also scattered throughout the game, ranging from treasures that glow and are usually hidden in nooks or crannies, to special bounties that randomly drop from opponents. The latter can also be earned via the Black Market feature, which taps into the Vita’s Near application. If Vita owners in your vicinity play Golden Abyss and have uncovered bounties you don’t have, a copy will automatically be transferred to you.

While you’ll mostly be happy when playing Golden Abyss, there are quite a few aspects that keep it from truly becoming a great game. Chief among which are the touchscreen-based quick time events. These are quite surprising and often require you to touch the very center of the screen. When you factor in its 5-inch size, this is a bit hard, even if you have long fingers. What’s worse, some boss battles rely only on such quicktime events, so get ready to die a lot.

There are also some all-new photo challenges that take place when you’re presented with some stunning vistas of the environment and asked to take a photo via the in-game camera. Depending on your ability to recreate a template photo, you’re rewarded with different things. Sadly, this is a bit awkward and often requires minute movements to get the perfect shot.

You’ll also get annoyed when Drake crosses over ravines on logs as he’ll often lose his balance so you need to tilt the Vita in order for him to continue on his way.

Visuals and Sound

Uncharted: Golden Abyss definitely lives up to the Uncharted name, offering some truly stunning environments and top notch graphics. There are moments when you can spot pre-rendered backgrounds but, most of the times, you’ll be busy marveling at the gorgeous game you’ve got running on the Vita’s already impressive 5-inch screen.

In terms of sound, you’ll once again be treated to some booming orchestral scores that will make your adventures feel even more epic. Voice acting is still top notch, with Nolan North reprising his role as Drake, while the new characters sound quite good. Dante’s Brooklyn wise guy accent can get a bit grating at times but, thankfully, you won’t hear him all that much.

Shoot your enemies ...
... or take them by surprise

Conclusion

Uncharted: Golden Abyss is a good game but it does have quite a few drawbacks that keep it from becoming great. If you look at it after playing previous Uncharted games, it’s not that impressive but, if you consider it’s the franchise’s first foray on the Vita, it’s a more than decent effort.

Gameplay feels great, although some activities get annoying very fast, like the touch-based quick time events. Fortunately, the stunning visuals, at least for a handheld game, and the story make you feel like you’re guiding Nate through another set of impressive adventures on the PS3.
