Major carrier Sprint has teased its Nexus S
4G users with an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade since February, but the
update was nowhere to be found.
However, the situation has just changed as the carrier has announced the
immediate availability of the Android 4.0 ICS update for Nexus S 4G.
Currently, the software version IMM76D is pushed OTA (over the air) and
it may take between 5-20 minutes to install depending on the use of
3G/4G/Wi-Fi.
Obviously, it's recommended to use a reliable Wi-Fi connection to
avoid extra charge on your monthly bill. Make sure the battery is at
least 50% charged and do not remove it during the update.
Besides the fact that it brings the phone's firmware to version Android
4.0, the update comes with new features, enhancements and loads of
fixes.
For example, the customizable favorites tray is now visible on all 5
home screens just above the hard keys. In addition, the contacts
application has been replaced with a People app, which is said to
provide better integration with Gmail, Email, Google+ and other apps.
Furthermore, with multitasking users will be able to quickly access and
switch between recently used apps by tapping and holding the Home key.
Once the update is applied, users will be able to create folders on the
home screen. This is easily done by dragging and dropping one app onto
another.
There are also new lock screen actions that allow Nexus 4G users to open
the camera or pull down notifications to check messages, without having
to unlock the smartphone.
With a simple swipe from left to right users can now dismiss individual
notifications, close apps from the recent apps list, as well as close
browser tabs.
A new application has been included that allows users to monitor and manage their network data usage.
Android Beam has been integrated as well, to allow two NFC-enabled devices to exchange apps, contacts, music, videos and more, much easier.
Last but not least, the update brings several camera enhancements,
including the possibility to capture panoramic photos. Additional
features like continuous focus, zero shutter lag exposure, stabilized
image zoom and decreased shot-to-shot speed have also been included.
